Sodomy, Sovereignty & Satan

Below is an excerpted conversation with two professing Christians who claim that Gay marriage is appropriate and then make a “knight jump” from sanctioned sodomy to the lordship of Satan. It’s rather disturbing on several levels!

For clarity my detractors’ words appear bold and italicized. May God bless your reading.

Since we are not allowed to mix state, and church, the church has no authority to say, who can, or cannot be contracted in marriage by that state. In short, it is none of our business, because it is not a Church function. The problem the church is having, and the source of confusion is that somehow, the Church is acting without God's authority and is insisting a GOVERNMENT acts like a Church. That is just wrong.

The civil magistrate, no less than the churchman, functions as God’s “minister” (Roman 13). God's authority extends to both the secular and the sacred. As God’s servant, the State’s authority is derivative and is NOT absolute.

The civil magistrate, as God’s “minister,” is to reward “good” and punish “evil” (Rom 13). God, not man, defines what is “good” and what is “evil.” The State therefore is to function as the administrator of God’s justice (Romans 13).

Distinguishing between “church” and “state” is indeed a biblical principle. But to attempt to separate the State from God—to declare that the civil magistrate is autonomous—is anathema. BOTH the “church” and the “state” have their own distinct role and function but BOTH of them are ordained by God and accountable to God.

As you contemplate what the Bible teaches about God and state, consider this: When did marriage become a function of the State? (I assure you…this is a very recent development of history.) Now, ask “why”? Why did the state take it upon itself to function in the capacity of regulating and “licensing” marriage?

[This is where it gets a little weird…my interlocutors, abruptly and without warning or explanation, steer the conversation away from the "State and marriage" to the "State and Satan."]

Steve, you have God picking Satan as His Minister, because the Word of God CLEARLY SHOWS that, first, Satan is the god of this earth:
2 Corinthians 4:4 "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." And that God Almighty gave the authority to rule this world to Satan, obviously before he fell, Luke 4:6 "And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. and Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."

God is sovereign, not Satan. God rules this world, not Satan. Have you NEVER read the book of Job? Satan can do absolutely nothing without God's permission. I find it a little disconcerting that you argue for the greatness of Satan and the smallness of God.

I notice you are quoting the words of Satan, to support your notion of Satan's superiority. Did it ever occur to you that when Satan uttered these words to our Lord that he was...lying? That he was trying to seduce and deceive?

When Jesus claims that ALL authority in heaven and earth has been "given to Him"...do you think it was the devil who gave Him this authority or the Father (Mtt 28:17)?

Here are some verses to consider:

Isaiah 46:10-11 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’ Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.

Isaiah 45:7 I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.’

Psalm 135:5-6 For I know that the Lord is great, And our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.

Colossians 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

Daniel 4:34b-35 For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation.  All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, “What have You done?”

Yes you are correct, they are Satan's words, but if they were not true, then what would be the temptation?

[Did you notice how all of the verses I provide are simply ignored?]

The temptation is the same whether the words are true or false. (For example, when Satan says to Eve, "You shall be like God" he was NOT telling her the truth. He was deceiving her. She was already the image of God! But the temptation to Eve was to be "like God" in that she could autonomously know/determine good and evil without reference to God.)

Thus, Satan was attempting to deceive our Lord into establishing a geo-political kingdom via worshiping him, rather than establish His Kingdom via suffering. Satan was tempting our Lord to grasp for power rather than humble Himself unto death. So...the temptation was for Christ to grasp for divine prerogatives rather than humble Himself as a servant. Thankfully, as Paul teaches, Christ endured the temptation to forsake the Father's will and the Father Himself HIGHLY EXALTED HIM (Philippians 2:5-11).

So you are agreeing with me, and saying that Satan did own earths Kingdom and could give them to Lord Yahushua.

No, I'm not agreeing with you. I'm saying this statement by the devil is a lie. (I've never had to convince a professing Christian that when Satan speaks...when he tempts...when he cajoles...when he promises...he's LYING. It's amazing that you believe Satan!) Satan does not nor has he ever controlled the kingdoms of this world.

I don't know why I'm going through the trouble of providing more scripture [since you have ignored all of the others]...but here goes. Here are passages which CLEARLY teach that God—not Satan—controls/rules over the kingdoms and kings of this world.

John 19:10-11a Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above.”

Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

Daniel 2:20-21a Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.

Daniel 5:21b They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.

So who’s calling the shots around here, dear reader—God or Satan? The Bible believing Christian can rest assured: God is sovereign over all things and “the earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). And we can be equally assured that, according to the Bible, homosexuality is a sin and an abomination in the eyes of our sovereign God.

  1. Hey Steve, just thought of a good scripture while reading this conversation which I agree with you. It is John 8:44.....He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is [no] truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies". He can deceive you with portions of scripture. For example Ps.91:12- Matt. 4:6 which of course he misquotes. A deception, of any kind is of course a lie.
